How To Retreat Into Writing

I'm a little late in posting a blog entry because I've been on a much needed writing retreat. See, I've been so busy writing other things that I needed a break to focus on co-authoring my new book with my wife. We're writing a book about branding and we need to hold each other accountable so that we share equally in the content. I'm happy to say it was a productive weekend. We both made headway and we see the value in taking regular writing retreats. It helps to have friends with lake cabins and no cable or internet distractions.

Here's a few ways to make your writing retreat successful:

- Eliminate distractions (phone, internet, tv)
- Take plenty to eat and drink (no grocery trips needed)
- Embrace silence and solitude
- Write until you are tired, then write more the next day.
- Take time to be inspired. Read something you enjoy.

I was born in the Ohio Valley, but I moved to western Pennsylvania as a toddler. Aside from college and graduate school, I have always been surrounded by mountains and hills. Perhaps that's why two of my favorite places to visit are Jackson Hole and Asheville, North Carolina.
