How To Tell Your Story

May 10, 2010

In a previous post I said your story is your most compelling marketing tool. I recently read a column by Jason Fried, founder of 37signals and Inc. columnist, that has reinforced my belief. He says your story should be told with personality. Which means it should be authentic and in a voice that captures who you are.
Now, how do you do this? You practice. You write several drafts. You always stay true to who you are. You don't use business babble from another business site. You don't copy someone else's style. One word of caution. And this comes from a writer so it might sound self-fulfilling, but you should hire a writer if you simply cannot write. You know who you are. You are an excellent business or sales person, but you don't have great writing skills. Please hire someone (like me) to write your business-related content. We will capture your voice and your personality. That's our job. So avoid sounding just like your competitors and everyone else. Say something unique. Don't be afraid to be different. But be authentic.

I was born in the Ohio Valley, but I moved to western Pennsylvania as a toddler. Aside from college and graduate school, I have always been surrounded by mountains and hills. Perhaps that's why two of my favorite places to visit are Jackson Hole and Asheville, North Carolina.
