On Writing & PublishingHow Hungry Are You?April 12, 2010
I'm preparing for a trip to New York and I am not ready. No, not the packing part. The preparation of my pitch or pitches. I'm taking a more relaxed approach. Well, I said that last year too. But this year I'm not trying as hard. I'm hoping for serendipity. That's why I'm skipping the free-for-all speed dating with agents and editors. It hasn't really worked for going on three years, so why think it will work this year. I'm more purposeful now. I target rather than troll. Trolling is fishing from a boat with your line way out the back so you'll cover as much water as you can. You might say I'm picking my spots now. I'm determined to find the right agent. I'm willing to self-publish in the meantime. At the very least I'll be trying new ways to get my writing in the hands of readers. I'm not even opposed to giving my books or e-books away. The question is, how badly do I want to be published? How hungry am I? I realize I need to be hungrier. But what does that look like? What does it look like for you?

Archives
I was born in the Ohio Valley, but I moved to western Pennsylvania as a toddler. Aside from college and graduate school, I have always been surrounded by mountains and hills. Perhaps that's why two of my favorite places to visit are Jackson Hole and Asheville, North Carolina.
