What's Your Story?

March 31, 2010

Your story is the most powerful marketing tool you have if you are self-employed or you are a small business. Think about it. It's YOUR story. Not someone else's. No one has a story exactly like yours. Sure, there might be some similarities here and there. But it's uniquely yours.
If you aren't telling your story on your website, you should be. Make it personal, relatable and compelling. Add some drama. No, not made up drama. Talk about an obstacle you overcame. People want to do business with people, not some pseudo-corporation. So, be yourself. On the web, we want to see real people.
And why not try adding video? It's the single highest new feature on small business websites in 2009. With the proliferation of Hulu, YouTube, etc., video is becoming a necessity rather than an afterthought. I better get my camera out, I need to practice what I preach. Oh, and if you can, make it high-quality. But remember to compress it before you post it.

I was born in the Ohio Valley, but I moved to western Pennsylvania as a toddler. Aside from college and graduate school, I have always been surrounded by mountains and hills. Perhaps that's why two of my favorite places to visit are Jackson Hole and Asheville, North Carolina.
